Welcome to Museo Militaria
MUSEO MILITARIA The Artillery, Engineer and Signals Museum of Finland
Museo Militaria is a war history museum showcasing the history of Finnish artillery, engineering and signalling from the Middle Ages to modern times.
PERMANENT EXHIBITION OF THE MUSEUM
The permanent exhibition has been constructed in the three floors of the main building of the museum. The exhibition proceeds in chronological order from the Middle Ages when Finland was ruled by Sweden to modern times displaying in parallel the history of Finnish artillery, engineering and signalling. The exhibition also includes hands-on displays where you can try, for example, telegraphing, gun laying and the weight of teller mines. War-time documentaries are screened in the museum auditorium. The history of the Civil Guard, Lotta Svärd and Service Club organisations are also presented. The exhibition includes sections dedicated to, for example, Artillery General V. P. Nenonen, the scrambling of signalling, protection forming a part of engineering as well as the Armour Band.
The outdoor exhibition area features cannons from the 1870s to the 1980s, the heavy equipment of the pioneers and also an amateur military radio transmitter. The museum’s cannons with the most historical value are on display in the Artillery Hall.
The temporary exhibitions of the museum also display diverse perspectives beyond the three branches of military service.
If booked in advance, the museum offers expert guided tours in Finnish, Swedish and English to groups.
PUBLIC LECTURES AND EVENTS
The museum organises free-of-charge lectures once a month in the autumn and spring season. In addition, the operations of the museum include various events suitable for the whole family. Among others, Museo Militaria’s action day for the whole family is organised every autumn and the traditional Lotta Day singing event is organised in co-operation with the Hämeenlinnan Seudun Lottaperinneyhdistys association in the museum’s Artillery Hall every spring.
The museum also offers its facilities for conferences and festive occasions. The exhibition building features the Pohjolasali hall with AV technology and seating for approx. 50 people.
The Artillery Hall in the outdoor exhibition area provides seating for approx. 150 people.
The museum has an auditorium that provides seating for 47 people in the second floor of the main building. The auditorium also serves as the museum’s cinema.
